Henry Boote was born in Liverpool, England. In 1889 he emigrated to Australia and worked in Brisbane for 5 years as a jobbing compositor. During this period he contributed to the Queensland Worker. In 1894, Boote went to Bundaberg to edit the Bundaberg Guardian, a Labor paper. In 1897 he was invited by Andrew Fisher to start Gympie Truth. Became editor of the Australian Workman after the shipping strikes of 1890; published his first book of sea songs, The ways of many waters, 1849; 1901-3 edited the Grip in Grafton; 1904 became editor of The Australian Worker.
